Nothing adds personality to a yard like beautiful annuals or perennials. These bursts of flowery color can brighten up a front lawn or patch of garden immediately. To find high-quality flowers and vegetables, visit 42nd Street Greenhouse to browse the vast selection.
Located at 4221 South 700 East, the greenhouse is owned and operated by Diane Angus, assisted by her husband Roy. She’s been in the flower business for more than 25 years and brings her expertise to every customer who stops in at her nursery.
“I’ve had master gardeners come through and ask questions,” Diane says. “I haven’t taken any formal schooling but I’ve learned a lot over 26 years.”
What started as a small nursery more than two decades ago has grown to include five greenhouses where Diane grows all of her flowers and vegetables from seeds. Her plants include 17 varieties of petunias, 23 types of tomatoes (including heirloom varieties), gorgeous dahlias, zinnias, snapdragons, geraniums and a good assortment of vegetables. Flower baskets are available to decorate a porch or patio and this year Diane added perennials and rosebushes to her greenhouse for customers looking for more permanent greenery.
Customers new to gardening can get advice from Diane regarding what type of plants to purchase, what varieties do well in the sun or shade and how to care for tomatoes. She believes gardening on a regular basis can help alleviate stress.
“Not only do you get a sense of accomplishment,” she says, “but there’s a sense of serenity. Plus you get to enjoy it all summer.”
For the price of a nice meal, customers can purchase flowers to last from spring until frost. The initial expense is a small price to pay for the months of enjoyment flowers bring to a yard. Gardeners are always thinking ahead and Diane suggests customers should plan on investing in pansies during the fall for beautiful color through the winter and spring.
“It’s best to plant toward the end of September through October,” Diane says. “You want them planted before the first frost to get the roots established so they’ll come back in the spring.”
Along with fall pansies, Diane will sell varieties of chrysanthemums for beautiful fall color. Her healthy plants are all home-grown and because there’s no middle man, those savings are passed along to her customers.
“We’re an old-fashioned mom and pop business,” Roy says. “We’re the farmers. You’re actually buying local when you shop here.” 42nd Street Greenhouse is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. For more information about the nursery, call 801-266-1410.
