Highway

Utah's transportation system includes 43,155 miles of state, county, and city roads and highways. Of that mileage, 14% is classified as urban mileage.

The three most important highways within the state are I-15, which runs north towards the Idaho border and south into California; I-70, an east-west route in the central part of the state that begins at I-15; and I-80, which is also an east-west system through the Salt Lake City area.

Interstates 15 and 80 intersect just blocks south of the center of the downtown Salt Lake business district.

The interstate highways are important to the efficient transportation of goods and materials throughout Utah. Other important links in the interstate system are I-84 northbound into Idaho, and I-215, the Salt Lake County belt route which helps ease transportation access for westside industrial facilities.

Reconstruction of I-80 through the Salt Lake valley began in early 2008.  UDOT is employing advanced technology to accelerate construction and reduce delays on Innovate 80, which encompasses six projects along the I-80 Corridor. These technologies include Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC), a reversible barrier system and design/build construction.

ABC, which will reduce delays from months to days saving motorists millions of dollars in lost work hours and wasted gasoline, will be used to replace 12 bridges along the I-80 corridor in a two-month period from late June through early August 2008. This currently is the largest and most ambitious bridge building project in the world. UDOT will replace 22 bridges statewide using this technology in 2008.

In addition to replacing bridges, Innovate 80 will also add two new lanes in each direction of I-80 from State Street to 1300 East, add new lanes between Kimball Junction and Silver Creek, provide new concrete in Parleys Canyon (which will significantly reduce potholes for years to come) as well as provide several safety improvements.

In addition to the main interstate routes, Utah's other important highways are US-89, US-6/191, US-6, and US-40/191.
