Volunteer Efforts

During the floods of 1983, hundreds of Salt Lake County residents rallied together and worked side-by-side to save their community from disaster.  This impressive volunteer effort became the catalyst for the formation of a more structured, on-going volunteer movement to expand the delivery of government services to people in Salt Lake County.  In 1984, the Office of Volunteer Program Services was officially created, and the Salt Lake County volunteer program began.

Since its commencement, the volunteer program has gown at a phenomenal rate.  During 2005, over 25,000 volunteers served in 45 different volunteer programs and on 120 advisory boards and councils.  Volunteers delivered meals and acted as advocates and friends to home-bound older adults, coached youth sports teams, counseled and listened to troubled teens, recommended allocations of federal funds to non-profit community service organizations, and taught reading and writing to academically challenged children. All in all, they donated nearly 1 million hours of service valued at over $17 million. Truly, a little time can do a lot!

There are hundreds of little ways to become involved and make your community a better place to live. Volunteer A Little Time Can Do A Lot!
