Arts, History and Culture

Performing arts have always played a vital role in Utah culture. Salt Lake boasts an opera company, symphony orchestra, several ballet, modern dance and theater companies, and a flourishing community of visual artists, writers, poets and film- makers. The modern 2,800-seat Abravanel Hall/Art Center Complex and the elegant 2,000-seat Capitol Theatre are examples of Utah's continuing commitment to the performing arts.

Utah Arts Council provides more than 500 outreach services (including financial assistance) to schools, local arts councils and organizations, community centers, performing groups and individual artists.

Division of Indian Affairs develops and promotes programs to help the tribes and Indian communities find and implement solutions to their community problems.

Office of Museum Services works to promote Utah museums and the essential role they play in our state as sources of community pride and centers of public education

The Utah Historical Society/Division of State History's mission is to preserve and share Utah's past for the present and the future.

It's like pulling a history book off the shelf with chapters on everything from prehistory to Utah today--plus pages on people, places, and winter sports.  Information has been gathered from many Utah history sources to give an overview of Utah's fascinating history.

The Utah History for Kids site was created by the Utah State Historical Society to provide information about Utah's history to students and teachers

The State Library Division helps all libraries statewide better serve the public through creative use of new technology, partnerships, and strengthened traditional services.

The Salt Lake County Library System is the largest public library system in the state.  To serve the County's ever growing population, Salt Lake County Library operates 18 libraries (Bingham Creek, Columbus, Draper, East Millcreek, Herriman, Holladay, Hunter, Kearns, Magna, Park, Riverton, Sandy, Calvin S. Smith, South Jordan, Ruth Vine Tyler, West Jordan, West Valley and Whitmore), plus a reading room at Alta.

Pioneer - Utah's Online Library is a trio of web sites devoted to providing information for Utah's students, teachers, and citizens at large. The PIONEER web sites are each geared for a specific user group.  Academic PIONEER is designed to meet the needs of university and college students. School PIONEER is aimed at K-12 students and teachers. Public PIONEER, is designed for the wide-ranging information needs of library patrons and the general public.
