Educational Achievement

Utah ranks among the leading states in the educational attainment of its population. Utah's population has the highest literacy rate in the nation at 94%. Utah ranks first in the nation in the percentage of adults, ages 25-64, who have completed high school. At 83.8 percent, Utah's graduation rate is far above the national average of 69.9%.  (According to Education Week)  Utah State Board of Education requirements for all high school graduates include two years of a foreign language.

The state's system of public and private education offers a high quality education experience for nearly one-half million students in elementary and secondary programs. Utah high school seniors ranked 3rd in the nation by the College Board in earning college credits through AP exams.  In 2004, Utah students taking the SAT ranked 9th in the nation.  In addition, 69.1 percent of Utah students taking Advanced Placement exams in 2005 passed, compared with a national average of 61 percent.  Utah's average ACT composite score rose from 21.5 to 21.7 between 2005 and 2006, surpassing the national average of 21.1.

Utah provides a high level of financial support for its public education system. In 2005, Utah's total current expenditure as a percent of total personal income was 4.2% above the national average.
