High Tech

Technology industries and occupations are some of the fastest growing, with the highest paying wages worldwide. Salt Lake County has been the hub of the high-tech growth in the state. The University of Utah, located in Salt Lake County, has a long list of spin-off companies that have led the high tech growth in Utah. These companies include such homegrown giants as Evans & Sutherland, Myriad Genetics, Merit Medical, Echelon Bioscience, Ceramatec, Inc., Sonic Innovations and many others. Salt Lake County has also been able to attract a number of high-tech companies to the area because of the quality of the workforce and the access to world class research institutions located here.

A recent study by the American Electronics Association (AeA) ranked Utah 27th nationally in technology employment and investment. The study showed that the state had 49,300 technology jobs statewide in 2004. High-tech workers in Utah earned an average of $55,800 or 77 percent more than Utah's average private sector wage. The report also showed that Utah exported $990 million in high-tech goods in 2005.

Some of the more well-known technology firms expanding their operations to the Salt Lake area include:
